The Standing Of Islam Regarding The Matter Of Hijab}

Submitted by: Hijab AlFaisal

Islam does not only emphasize on the spiritual growth and betterment of its followers, rather it stresses on the need for improving the whole society. Therefore, all the commandments and orders of Islam are directed towards general well being in addition to the personal purity of a person.

One of the many such propagations of Islam that are towards improving the society is the use of Hijab by women. Islam is an ardent supporter of Hijab and makes it mandatory on Muslim women to wear Hijab whenever there is a need of coming in front of people that are non-Mahram to a women.

Besides being a gesture of maintaining sanctity of women, the major reason why Islam imposes Hijab is that it prevents and minimizes the chances of adultery, which is the most condoned evil in all the religions. Regarding this Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:

Allah fixed the very portion of adultery which a man will indulge in. there would be no escape from it. The adultery of eye is the lustful look and the adultery of the ears is listening to voluptuous (song or talk) and the adultery of the tongue is licentious speech and the adultery of the hand is the lustful grip (embrace) and the adultery of the feet is to walk (to the place) where he intends to commit adultery and the heart yearns and desires which he may or may not put into effect. This hadith clearly explains the different types of adultery in Islam besides the conventional adultery. Therefore, as tempting as it looks an equal emphasis is put by Islam on avoiding it to the farthest extent possible. Therefore, in order to prevent the adultery of eyes, a women needs to wear hijab and a man needs to lower his gaze when confronting women. Therefore, if women covered their faces, there would be fewer chances of men seeing them with lustful looks thus reducing the overall chances of committing adultery.

Islam understands the true psychology of humans and thus recommends everything possible to suppress and do away with the factor of inherent evil which persuades a person to committing sins like adultery. Pertaining to wearing of hijab islam gives the way it needs to worn. All Almighty says in Quran:

And to draw their veils all over Juyoobihinna (i.e. their bodies, faces, necks, and bosoms) (24:31)

In addition to the face, Islam points out covering of every part of the body that can give a hint of sexuality to opposite sex and provoke their lustful feelings. Therefore, a woman needs to cover herself from other men to protect herself from all the lustful gazes and protect her sanctity.

The greatest allegation of west is that wearing Hijab does not let women work hand in hand with men. This allegation is wrong because in no clause of Hijab it can be found that women cannot work with men. Moreover, the mere introduction of Hijab is just to allow women to walk and work freely in the world, whilst protecting their integrity and prestige. Allah Almighty says in Quran:

Except that which is apparent (like both eyes for necessity to see the way, or outer palms of hands or one eye or dress like veil, gloves, head cover, apron). (24:31)

This ayah also explains that the parts of body, which cannot be covered, and which are required to perform regular chores and duties.

Therefore, women and men both must understand the reason why Islam implements the wearing of Hijab. It has nothing to do with oppressing females, neither does it have anything to do with making it difficult for women to live daily life. Rather, it all is their to help women be respected and protect the society from various evils that currently prevail in the societies where women do no wear Hijab.
